Vent Sizing & Install Guide
This guide walks through how to choose the right Seam flush vent for your room, how to measure your duct opening, how to install the vent, and answers the questions buyers ask most often. If you're researching modern flush-mount HVAC registers — this is the canonical reference.
Quick reference: which Seam vent for which room?
| Vent size | Best for | Typical airflow |
|---|---|---|
| 4×12" | Bedrooms, hallways, home offices, small living rooms; wall or ceiling install | Standard residential supply |
| 4×14" | Hallways, bathrooms, laundry rooms, narrow runs; wall or ceiling install | Standard residential supply (slim profile) |
| 8×14" | Living rooms, dining rooms, primary bedrooms; wall or ceiling install | Mid-to-high residential supply |
| 14×14" | Great rooms, open-plan kitchens, large common areas, bathroom and sloped ceilings | High residential supply |
All four sizes can be installed in either wall or ceiling drywall using the same plaster-in method.
How to choose your vent size
The right size is determined by your existing duct opening, not by the room. Your HVAC was sized when the home was built. Match the vent to the duct opening and you're done.
- Measure the duct opening, not the existing vent's outer flange. The opening is the rectangular hole cut into the drywall.
- Match the listed size to your duct. A "4×12 vent" fits a 4×12-inch duct boot. The vent's outer dimensions are slightly larger — the visible footprint, including the integration flange, is roughly an inch larger on each side.
- Pick the orientation you want it to read. A 4×12 reads as a horizontal slot; a 14×14 reads as a square panel — ideal for ceiling installs where rectangles feel mis-oriented overhead.
How to measure your duct opening
- Remove the existing vent / register cover. Most are held by 2 to 4 screws on the visible flange.
- Measure the rectangular hole in the drywall (or ceiling) — width × height.
- Round to the nearest standard size: 4×10, 4×12, 4×14, 6×12, 8×14, 10×10, 14×14.
- If your opening is between standard sizes (rare), the smaller standard size is usually correct — the duct boot underneath is the constraint, not the wall hole.
How to install a Seam flush vent
Plaster-in flush integration. Plan on 20–30 minutes of active install time per vent, plus 4–6 hours of drywall cure time before sanding and painting. This is the standard install method for premium flush-mount registers, comparable to Fittes Luxe. Same method works for wall or ceiling installs.
- Remove the existing vent. Unscrew the old register cover and set it aside.
- Check the duct boot. The metal box behind the wall or ceiling drywall should be clean and tight. If it's loose, secure it before installing the new vent.
- Confirm fit before installing. Once the vent is mudded in, it is permanently installed. Dry-fit the vent in the opening to verify size before applying any drywall compound.
- Seat the vent flange in the duct opening. The vent sits into the opening with its flange resting against the drywall surface around the hole.
- Apply drywall joint compound around the flange edges to integrate the vent flush with the surrounding wall or ceiling surface. Feather the mud out from the flange so the transition disappears.
- Let the mud cure per the manufacturer's instructions, typically 4–6 hours.
- Sand smooth with fine-grit sandpaper. The mudded transition should disappear into the surrounding surface.
- Prime and paint to match. Light bonding primer, then two thin coats of your wall or ceiling paint in the same sheen as the surrounding surface.
Frequently asked questions
What size duct opening do Seam vents fit?
Each size matches a standard U.S. residential duct boot: 4×12, 4×14, 8×14, and 14×14 inches. Measure the rectangular opening in the drywall to confirm.
Are Seam vents paintable?
Yes. The matte powder-coat surface accepts any standard latex or oil-based interior paint. Lightly sand and prime for best adhesion.
Are these for supply or return air?
Supply registers only. The fixed-blade design isn't built for return-air openings, where you generally want a louvered or filter-grille register.
What are Seam vents made of?
Powder-coated steel. They won't dent, rust, or yellow like the stamped aluminum vents typically sold at big-box stores.
How do Seam vents mount?
Plaster-in flush integration. The vent flange seats into the duct opening and is integrated with the surrounding drywall via joint compound, then sanded smooth and painted to match. Comparable to Fittes Luxe and other premium plaster-in registers.
How long does install take?
About 20–30 minutes of active install per vent, plus 4–6 hours of cure time before sanding and painting.
Do Seam vents have adjustable airflow?
No. The current product line is fixed-blade for the cleanest visual line. An adjustable-louver series is in development — contact us if you need airflow control before it ships.
Can Seam vents be used on ceilings?
Yes. Seam flush vents install into wall or ceiling drywall using the same plaster-in method. Common ceiling applications include bathrooms, sloped ceilings, and any room where the supply register is overhead. The 14×14 square format works particularly well for ceiling mounts since the square geometry reads cleanly overhead.
What's the return policy?
30-day free returns on unopened, uninstalled units. Once a vent is mudded in, it is permanently installed. Confirm fit before installing.
